The Famee Furlane of Vancouver was founded in 1958 by a group of mostly young immigrants to Canada from the Region of Friuli in Northern Italy.
The goal was to form a society to unite people of Friulian origin and descent into a large family with the intention of maintaining the honour of Friuli and Italy within Canada. A place where they could gather socially in order to maintain, enjoy and promote their family values, culture and traditions. It was also important that as immigrants in a new country, that they would unite together to help each other adjust, find work for each other by networking and to settle into the Canadian society.
“The Famee Furlane Society of Vancouver promotes Friulan culture, traditions, friendship, and folklore by providing various musical, artistic, athletic, culinary, travel, and recreational events for all members to enjoy”
Members and their families continue to participate in activities, events and special occasions, many of which are also available to the general public. The Ladies Auxiliary enhanced the social activities of the society and also became involved in community events such as volunteering at the blood donor clinics, fund raising for the Variety Club, to name a few. The society also became a Sunshine Coach donor, support of which continues.
In 1976, property at 2605 East Pender Street, in Vancouver, was purchased and extensively renovated.
